Elden Ring’s toughest bosses fall into two categories: those you can beat with any build given enough patience, and those that demand specific counterplay. This guide breaks down strategies for the most feared encounters in the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree. Every strategy below has been tested on a melee build at RL150 — adjust the damage numbers for your own level.
Malenia, Blade of Miquella
The single most difficult fight in the base game. Two phases, heavy healing on hit, and the infamous Waterfowl Dance combo.
Phase 1 — Malenia
- Waterfowl Dance — telegraphed by a jump. At close range: jump into her, roll toward her sword, then away-rolls for the second and third flurries. At long range: sprint perpendicular and break line of sight.
- Prosthesis Flurry (3-hit) — dodge into the first swing, then roll away for hits 2 and 3.
- Bleed works, but frost is her true weakness — Hoarfrost Stomp (patched but still viable) or Frozen Needle.
Phase 2 — Goddess of Rot
- Her scarlet-rot plume is a delayed AoE. Sprint immediately after it lands.
- The giant scarlet bird summon deals one massive strike — learn the 2-beat rhythm and roll on the second beat.
Most players succeed on Malenia after ~30 attempts with patience, not after 3 attempts with aggression. Slow down.
Maliketh, the Black Blade
Two phases. Phase 1 (Beast Clergyman) is simple; Phase 2 (Maliketh) is a speed check.
- Destined Death — the black waves. Jump as they reach you. They reduce your maximum HP until the fight ends.
- Aerial Dive — run sideways, don’t roll. Roll-timing on this attack is extremely tight.
- Maliketh’s weakness is Holy Resistance is very low — Sacred Blade Ash of War on a high-STR weapon is shockingly effective.
Godfrey / Hoarah Loux
Phase 2 shifts from weapon to grappling moves. Learning one combo at a time is the trick here.
- Earthquake slam — he jumps. Roll forward and slightly left during descent.
- Grab combo — he runs forward stamping. Roll towards him on the third stamp.
- His head-butt is a guaranteed visceral; trigger it with poise-break and unload R2s during the stagger animation.
Promised Consort Radahn (Shadow of the Erdtree)
The most punishing boss FromSoftware has ever designed. There is no “easy strategy” — only adjustments that reduce the randomness.
- Respec into a build that uses a light-load roll. The timing on Radahn’s combos requires every frame of invincibility.
- Use scadutree fragments. Seriously — skipping exploration for this fight makes it twice as hard. Aim for Scadutree Blessing +18 minimum before attempting.
- Phase 2 holy waves: sprint during the wind-up and roll on the third impact. Camera off-target gives more consistent sprinting.
Messmer the Impaler
A pure skill check. Reward for learning the pattern: a one-phase win feels incredibly clean.
- His spear throws are faster than they look. Roll early.
- Fire damage is heavily resisted — use a Lightning or Scarlet Rot build if possible.
- Phase 2: his serpent tail attacks hit harder than the spear. Switch aggression pattern.
General tips that save runs
- Equip the Gold Pickled Fowl Foot before tough bosses — +20% runes for an hour is huge when you need to farm.
- Ritual Shield Talisman (unused on empty-flask runs) gives +10% damage. Excellent on “one-try” attempts.
- Mimic Tear + Black Knife Tiche + any Dragon Communion buff stacks properly. Don’t feel bad about using ashes.
