Vanilla Minecraft is a great game, but once you’ve played it for a few hundred hours, mods transform it into something entirely new. These twelve mods are the non-negotiable starting point in 2025.
Performance & optimization
- Sodium — triples average FPS by rewriting the renderer. The single most impactful mod ever made for Minecraft.
- Lithium — optimizes the server tick, especially in large farms and redstone setups.
- Starlight — replaces the buggy vanilla light engine, eliminating chunk-loading stutter.
Visual upgrades
- Iris Shaders — companion to Sodium, adds full shader-pack support (Complementary, BSL, SEUS).
- Distant Horizons — adds a low-detail “LOD” render distance of 32+ chunks without melting your GPU.
- Fresh Animations (resource pack) — proper mob animations, finally.
Quality of life
- JEI (Just Enough Items) — full recipe viewer and search. Indispensable.
- Xaero’s Minimap + World Map — waypoint system that works in any dimension.
- AppleSkin — shows exact hunger and saturation values; no more guessing when to eat.
Gameplay overhauls
- Create — a full industrial mechanics mod; think Factorio in Minecraft.
- Terralith — 85 new biomes that blend seamlessly with vanilla generation.
- Better Combat — directional attacks, combos, and proper weapon weight.
Installation
Use the Fabric loader with the Modrinth launcher. Fabric has better performance than Forge and faster mod updates. Modrinth handles dependency hell automatically.
Start with just the performance trio (Sodium, Lithium, Starlight). You’ll be amazed how different the game feels even before adding any content mods.
