Skyrim is 14 years old and still, thanks to its modding community, one of the best RPG experiences you can have on PC. This is the 2025 starter pack — every mod here is stable, well-maintained, and plays nicely with the others.
The foundation (install first)
- SKSE64 — Script Extender. Required by 80% of serious mods.
- Address Library for SKSE Plugins — ensures compatibility across Skyrim updates.
- SkyUI — the vanilla UI is objectively bad; SkyUI fixes it and enables MCM menus.
- Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP) — thousands of vanilla bug fixes.
Graphics & environment
- Skyland AIO — full HD texture overhaul for every region.
- ENB Series + Rudy ENB — the best-looking preset with reasonable performance.
- Cathedral Weathers — dramatic, lore-friendly weather and lighting.
- Majestic Mountains — redone mountain meshes, drastically more realistic silhouettes.
Combat & gameplay
- Wildcat — Combat of Skyrim — faster, deadlier combat without breaking balance.
- Simple Dual Sheath — finally shows both weapons on your back.
- Ordinator — Perks of Skyrim — rewrites every perk tree. Massive build variety.
- Apocalypse — Magic of Skyrim — 155 new spells across every school.
Quality of life
- A Quality World Map — readable roads and cleaner icons.
- Alternate Start — Live Another Life — skip the Helgen intro; start as a bandit, sailor, scholar, etc.
- Immersive Citizens — NPCs actually have schedules, react to danger, sleep in their beds.
Load order & tools
Use Mod Organizer 2 — never install to the Skyrim folder directly. Run LOOT after every mod to sort your load order, and SSEEdit for cleaning masters. For ENB setup, download the latest ENB binaries from enbdev.com and drop them into your game folder.
If your FPS tanks after ENB, turn off SSAO, Depth of Field, and Bloom in the ENB menu (SHIFT+Enter in game). Those three options eat 40% of the performance budget.
Finishing touch
Add {{ Lux }} for proper interior lighting and A Quality Grass for ground cover. At this point, Skyrim starts looking like a 2025 game.
